Simple steps to begin

Each exercise invites you to observe the world patiently and discover the joy of lines drawn without haste.

Practice soft lines Hold the charcoal near the tip and draw long lines without pressure. Let your hand glide across the paper, feel the texture. Repeat several times, noticing how the tone changes when you tilt the tool.

Build textured shadows Apply light layers of charcoal, then blend with your finger or a piece of cloth. Gradually add darker tones in areas where light doesn't reach. Each layer brings depth to your form.

Erase controlled for light Use the eraser like a brush: gently erase in areas where you want to create highlights. On an autumn leaf, these fine reflections make the drawing appear alive. Practice on a separate piece of paper.
Discover how
Draw a fir cone Observe the overall shape, then add the scales one by one with short, curved lines. The shadows between the scales give volume. Don't rush – each detail is an opportunity to pause and look closely.
Start the exercise
Render the veins of a leaf Draw the leaf's outline, then trace the main vein with a fine line. Add secondary veins with light strokes, leaving white spaces for the light falling on the surface. Each leaf is unique.

Review

Diana M., beginner in visual arts

"I started drawing leaves after reading the steps on the website. Now I have an entire notebook just for shadows and lights. It helps me unwind after work."
