Each step invites you to observe, breathe, and let your hand follow the form.
01
Choose a simple shape
Start with a pine cone or an autumn leaf. Place the object in front of you and look at its outline for a minute, without drawing. Notice where the light falls and where the shadow deepens.
02
Draw the base line
With the charcoal placed on its edge, draw the broad outline of the shape. Don't rush. The line can be shaky – it will be your guide for the shadows. Let the paper breathe between movements.
03
Build textured shadows
Apply light pressure to the darker areas, then blend with your finger or a piece of soft cloth. Add layers gradually, from light tones to denser ones. Each layer brings depth.
04
Erase to create light
Use the eraser like a brush: gently erase where the light touches the leaf or cone. Fine highlights transform a flat drawing into a form that seems to emerge from the paper.
05
Detail natural textures
With the tip of the charcoal, add the leaf's veins or the pine cone's scales. Don't try to reproduce every detail – choose a few lines that suggest the texture. Your eyes will fill in the rest.
06
Look and rest
Set the drawing aside for a few minutes. When you return, you'll see what works and what you can adjust. Drawing is not a race, but a quiet conversation between you and the paper.
